General Questions
Why is the firm called Weekend Law?
Weekend Law was founded to provide convenient legal services for busy individuals and families who may find it difficult to schedule appointments during traditional business hours. We offer evening and weekend appointments designed to fit our clients’ work and family schedules, making legal services more accessible and convenient.
What areas of law does Weekend Law handle?
Weekend Law focuses on estate planning, trusts, probate and estate administration, uncontested divorce, stepparent and adult adoption, business formation, and select family-based immigration matters. Our goal is to provide practical legal solutions through transparent flat-fee services whenever possible.
Can Weekend Law represent active-duty military members or military retirees?
No. Weekend Law is a private law practice owned by Philip T. McCollum and is completely separate from his full-time employment as a civilian attorney with the United States Air Force. Weekend Law is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the United States Air Force, the Department of Defense, or any other government agency. All legal services provided through Weekend Law are performed in Philip’s personal capacity during approved off-duty hours and in accordance with applicable federal ethics rules and professional responsibility requirements.
Because of these ethical obligations, Weekend Law cannot represent individuals who are eligible to receive legal assistance through the military legal assistance program. This generally includes active-duty service members, military retirees, their eligible dependents, and certain other individuals who qualify for free legal assistance through military legal assistance offices. If you are eligible for military legal assistance, Weekend Law encourages you to take advantage of those services, which are available at no cost.
Philip has obtained approval to engage in outside legal practice consistent with applicable federal ethics rules. His full-time employment also influences the scope of Weekend Law’s practice. Rather than attempting to provide every type of legal service, the firm intentionally limits its practice to select areas that can be effectively handled during evenings and weekends, including estate planning, probate and estate administration, uncontested divorce, adoption, business formation, and select family-based immigration matters. This focused approach allows Weekend Law to provide responsive, high-quality legal services while maintaining full compliance with applicable ethical obligations.
If you are unsure whether these restrictions apply to you, please contact Weekend Law before requesting a consultation. We are happy to discuss your circumstances and, when appropriate, refer prospective clients to another attorney or to a military legal assistance office that may be able to assist them.
Where are appointments conducted?
Consultations may be conducted by telephone, video conference, or in person. Most in-person appointments are held at:
IncuHub Hampton
2 Eaton Street
Hampton, Virginia 23669
IncuHub is a professional coworking and business center that provides a comfortable and professional meeting environment with convenient parking and modern conference facilities. This arrangement allows Weekend Law to offer clients a professional office setting while maintaining affordable overhead costs.
Do you offer free consultations?
Weekend Law offers both complimentary and paid consultations depending on the nature of the matter and the services requested. For many flat-fee services, clients who already know the services they need may be able to complete the consultation, engagement process, and document planning during a single one- to two-hour appointment. Please contact us to discuss your situation and determine the consultation option that best fits your needs.
Do you charge flat fees?
Yes. Many of our services are offered on a flat-fee basis so clients understand the cost of representation before work begins. Flat fees generally include consultation, document preparation, reasonable client communications, and guidance related to the specific service being provided. The specific scope of representation for each matter will be outlined in the engagement agreement.
Are court filing fees and government fees included in your flat fees?
No. Court filing fees, recording fees, government filing fees, publication costs, medical examination fees, guardian ad litem fees, and other third-party expenses are generally not included unless specifically stated otherwise. Clients remain responsible for these costs.
Can Weekend Law assist clients outside Hampton Roads?
In many cases, yes. Many of Weekend Law’s services, including estate planning, business formation, and certain immigration matters, can often be handled remotely through telephone, video conference, secure electronic document exchange, and mail. Please contact us to discuss your location and the specific services you require.
